Tropical Infections

Dengue fever is a disease caused by the Dengue Virus, transmitted primarily by mosquitoes, and infects more than 390 million people each year. Although most infected people are asymptomatic or suffer from self-limiting dengue, up to 1 million clinical cases develop severe manifestations, including dengue haemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome, resulting in about 25,000 deaths each year, mainly among children. It is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases worldwide, and is now entrenched in a growing number of large tropical cities.

Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) is the prototype virus of the genus Flavivirus, which can cause yellow fever. Historically, yellow fever has been considered one of the most dangerous infectious diseases. Yellow Fever Virus is endemic in tropical and subtropical areas of South America and Africa and is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of the haemophilus, aedes and dimorphus genera endemic to these regions. Yellow Fever Virus circulates mainly between mosquitoes and non-human primates. However, the expansion of human range into jungle areas has raised the possibility of the introduction of Yellow Fever Virus into urban areas, leading to human-to-human transmission of Yellow Fever Virus through mosquito bites.

Dengue Virus, Zika Virus and Chikungunya Virus all cause acute infectious diseases characterized by fever, rash and joint pain. The main vector of these three viruses is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the endemic areas are essentially the same, and the clinical manifestations are similar, with differentiation dependent on laboratory- specific tests.
